akashaganga

Image
It is one of seven holy theerthams in Seshagiri hills. According to legend, Akasha Ganga theertham originates from Lord Venkateswara’s lotus feet. All rituals of the Tirumala temple are performed with its waters, which indicates the great importance of this waterfall. It is said that in ancient times priests crossed the woods and traversed rugged landscapes to reach the waterfall and bring water to the Lord’s abhishekam early in the morning. However, when Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD) began taking care of the temples of Tirupati, it created direct pipelines from the waterfall to the temple, simplifying the work to a great extent.

silathoranam

Image
This notified National Geo-heritage Monument is a distinctive geological feature. The arch is also called Silathoranam in the local language (Telugu language: sila means ‘rock’ and thoranam means a garland strung over a threshold, connecting two vertical columns or an ‘arch’ as in this case). The arch is naturally formed in the quartzites of Cuddapah Supergroup of Middle to Upper Proterozoic (1600 to 570 Ma) due to natural erosive forces. In the 1980s, during excavations for a geological fault in the Tirumala hills, geologists found this rare geological formation of the rock arch which has two dissimilar sets of rocks with a connecting thin link. The assessed geological age of the rock arch is 2.5 million years. Formation of the arch is attributed to intensified weathering and erosion of stream action that has withstood the torque of nature. This is a rare geological fault which is technically called in the geological idiom as ‘Eparchaean Unconformity.

chandragiri fort

There is something or the other to do for everyone in Tirupati. Chandragiri Palace & Fort is one of the famous  tourist places in Tirupati  that attracts architecture aficionados. Exuding charm and opulence from various nooks, this Palace was constructed in the 11th century during the Vijayanagar Kingdom by Yadav Naidu Kings. In the present day, this is taken as the finest example of architecture from that kingdom. Many tourists are attracted to the Fort by virtue of its rich heritage.

sri venkateswara national park

Another one of the most famous  places to visit in Tirupati  is Sri Venkateswara National Park. If you are passionate about getting to know about the flora and fauna of Tirupati then you must stop by this national park. Red Sanders, Shorea thumburggaia, and Sandalwood are some of the endemic plant species that can be found in this national park. You can also carry your binoculars on your vacations as you can spot around 178 species of birds here. As far as the fauna is considered this national park is famous for animals like leopard, ancient elephants, Sloth bear, spotted deer and more.

Talakona

Image
Talakona is around an hour away from bustling Tirupati and is a calm, smooth trek to       waterfall. The falls themselves are not that big, but the area is very beautiful. The trek is easy, mostly stairs or concrete paths. One can get into the shallow regions under the falls easily. There are, however, no changing rooms for men in case you need to change. The changing room for women is a dilapidated cabin-like structure that is quite scary to go into. Apart frthat, Talakona is a great place to escape to from Tirupati.

The temple is an architectural wonder and one can easily spend 2-3 hrs here admiring the beautiful sculptures and architecture. The main prayer hall has beautiful marble sculptures and is quite serene and peaceful. In the shops within the campus you can buy books, calendar and other religious paraphernalia too.

srivari metu

Image
Tirumala, the abode of Lord Venkateswara also called as Lord Balaji, can be trekked from two paths. One is the long route from Alipiri, where there are more than 3400 steps and about 2 kms of walking. The second and the short route is "Srivari Mettu", Srivari Mettu, literally meaning Lord's step, is situated at a distance of about 19 Kms from Tirupathi Railway station and about 5 Kms from Srinivasa Mangapuram. Though this route is considered to be oldest, this was defunct and not used by devotees due to the fear of wild animals and robbery. Now that TTD has renovated and provided full security, many devotees are using this path to reach Tirumala. There are 2388 steps from Srivari Mettu and distance wise, it is about 2.1 Kms. to reach tirumala. Its a much faster route to reach Tirumala than from Alipiri. This route is well maintained throughout with sheds to avoid heat and rain.
